Neck pain ranges from mild stiffness to constant, sharp discomfort, and the severity varies depending on the underlying cause. It can stem from poor posture, injury, or structural changes in the spine. Though some pain stays localized, it sometimes radiates into the shoulders and head. Here are some pain management techniques for neck pain sufferers:

Steroid Injections

Steroid injections deliver anti-inflammatory medication directly to the area around irritated nerves or joints in the cervical spine. They usually combine a corticosteroid with a local anesthetic to provide additional relief during treatment. Some types of injections for neck pain include:

  • Epidural steroid injections
  • Facet joint injections
  • Nerve root blocks

A physician uses imaging guidance to place the needle accurately. After the injection, you might notice temporary soreness at the site before the medication takes effect over several days. Doctors often limit the number of injections within a given year; this reduces the risk of side effects from repeated steroid exposure.

Radiofrequency Ablation

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) uses heat generated by radio waves to disrupt specific nerves that carry pain signals from the neck. Before the procedure, a physician may perform a diagnostic nerve block to identify which nerves are responsible for your discomfort. RFA usually targets the medial branch nerves connected to the facet joints in the cervical spine. During treatment, a doctor inserts a thin needle near the targeted nerve using imaging guidance. A small electrode heats the nerve tissue, interrupting its ability to transmit pain signals. The procedure is minimally invasive, and patients usually return home the same day. Results vary, and the effect is not permanent, since nerves regenerate over time. Some patients return for repeat treatments when symptoms come back.

Implantable Devices

Implantable devices are an advanced option, and they’re usually reserved for people with chronic neck pain that doesn’t respond to other treatments. Spinal cord stimulators are a common option. These devices send mild electrical pulses to the spinal cord, which alters how pain signals reach the brain. The system includes a small generator placed under the skin and thin leads positioned near the spinal cord.

Many patients begin with a trial phase before a permanent device is placed, which allows doctors to evaluate the effectiveness of the stimulation. During this trial period, a temporary system measures symptom relief, and patients can determine whether the treatment provides a meaningful benefit. A surgeon implants the permanent device after a successful trial response.

You control the device with a handheld remote or a connected app, adjusting settings to suit your activity and comfort level. Recovery time depends on the individual and the type of device used. Battery replacement or recharging is part of long-term maintenance, and your care team will explain the schedule. Since implantation involves surgery, doctors evaluate each candidate and discuss the possible risks beforehand.

Visit a Neck Pain Specialist

Each technique addresses neck pain differently, and the right choice depends on your diagnosis, symptoms, and medical history. A neck pain specialist will examine your condition and walk you through the options that apply to your situation. Self-directed treatment without a proper evaluation may delay accurate diagnosis. Schedule an appointment with a pain specialist today to develop a customized treatment plan.
