An anxiety disorder is a mental health condition marked by persistent, excessive fear or worry that interferes with daily activities. Unlike ordinary nervousness, these feelings do not fade quickly, and they often grow stronger over time without proper care. People need treatment because untreated anxiety can affect work, relationships, sleep, and overall well-being. Here is some more information about anxiety and its treatments:

Understanding Anxiety

Generalized anxiety disorder involves ongoing, hard-to-control worry about many parts of life, such as health, finances, or work. This worry is often out of proportion to the actual situation, and it can persist for long periods of time. People with this type may struggle to identify a single cause for their distress. Some recognized types of anxiety include:

  • Panic disorder: characterized by sudden episodes of intense fear, known as panic attacks
  • Social anxiety: intense fear or dread of social situations
  • Phobias: extreme fear of specific objects or situations
  • Separation anxiety: excessive fear of being separated from loved ones

Reviewing Symptoms of Anxiety

The symptoms of anxiety fall into two broad groups: physical and emotional. Physical signs are those that include a racing heart, sweating, trembling, shortness of breath, muscle tension, and stomach discomfort. Emotional signs often involve constant worry and restlessness; irritability, and a sense of impending danger are also emotional symptoms of anxiety.

When these symptoms appear, it may be during specific situations or without any clear trigger at all. Some people notice trouble concentrating, and others experience disrupted sleep or fatigue. The intensity and frequency of symptoms vary from one person to the next.

Exploring Treatment Options

Psychotherapy, sometimes called talk therapy, is a common approach for managing an anxiety disorder. Cognitive behavioral therapy helps people identify unhelpful thought patterns, and it teaches practical skills to respond to anxious situations. A therapist may also use exposure techniques that gradually reduce fear responses over time.

Medication management is another option that a psychiatrist may discuss with a patient. Several classes of medication are used for anxiety, and a doctor selects an option based on the person’s symptoms and health history. Regular follow-up appointments help the psychiatrist monitor progress and adjust the plan as needed.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation, or TMS, is a noninvasive procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain. It may be an option when other treatments have not produced the desired results, and it does not require surgery or anesthesia. TMS works by targeting specific areas of the brain associated with mood regulation to help alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Knowing When To Seek Help

You may want to seek help when anxiety begins to disrupt your daily routine. Common warning signs include:

  • Trouble completing tasks at work
  • Avoiding social situations
  • Struggling to maintain relationships
  • Persistent physical symptoms without a clear medical explanation
  • Worry that feels impossible to control and may last for weeks or months
  • Relying on unhealthy habits to cope with stress
  • Sleep problems, appetite changes, and ongoing fatigue
  • Anxious thoughts that affect your safety or the safety of others

Learn More About Anxiety Disorder

An anxiety disorder is a treatable condition that involves persistent fear or worry, and it can take several forms with a wide range of symptoms. Occasional nervousness is a normal part of life, but an anxiety disorder involves ongoing symptoms that interfere with daily function. Anxiety generally needs treatment to improve, and it can lead to substance use disorders and other serious conditions if left untreated. If you want to learn more about treatment for anxiety disorders, consult a psychiatrist near you.
