As chronic pain affects people in numerous ways, some patients may require additional treatment strategies when standard therapies fail to provide adequate relief. Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is a minimally invasive procedure; it uses electrical impulses to interrupt pain signals before they reach the brain. SCS is a viable alternative for chronic pain management. Here is more information on what SCS is, how it works, and what patients can expect from the process:

What Is Spinal Cord Stimulation?

Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is a neuromodulation therapy that delivers mild electrical impulses to the spinal cord, which reduces the perception of pain. A small implanted device connects to thin leads in the epidural space. The patient controls it externally using a handheld remote, and this allows for real-time adjustments to stimulation levels.

SCS may be recommended for conditions such as failed back surgery syndrome, complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), and neuropathic pain; it is evaluated after conservative therapies have been trialed without sufficient success. It is not a first-line treatment. While SCS does not aim to eliminate pain entirely, it is designed to reduce pain to a level that is manageable for the patient.

How Does It Relieve Pain?

SCS modulates the way pain signals travel through the nervous system. Electrical impulses delivered by the device interfere with pain transmission along the spinal cord, which prevents signals from reaching the brain where they are consciously perceived. Depending on the stimulation frequency used, patients may feel a mild tingling sensation or no sensation at all. Different waveforms produce different results, and physicians select the stimulation type based on the patient’s pain pattern, location, and individual response.

How Effective Is It?

Effectiveness varies depending on the condition being treated; a pain management specialist will determine if this treatment is right for each patient. SCS may help patients with:

  • Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS)
  • Neuropathy
  • Failed back surgery syndrome
  • Peripheral vascular disease

What Does the Process Involve?

The process begins with a thorough patient evaluation. This includes assessments that confirm that the patient is an appropriate candidate, and a screening trial is conducted before any permanent implant is placed. During the trial, temporary leads are inserted so that the patient can use the device for several days to assess whether meaningful pain reduction is achieved.

If the trial produces a sufficient reduction in pain, the patient proceeds to permanent implantation. The permanent procedure involves placing the leads and implanting the pulse generator under the skin; the generator may be positioned near the lower back or abdomen. Patients may be advised to limit bending, twisting, and lifting during recovery.

Achieve Chronic Pain Relief

Spinal cord stimulation offers potential pain reduction for patients who have not found relief through conventional treatments. The trial-first approach reduces risk, and adjustable device settings allow therapy to be refined over time. For those living with persistent neuropathic or spinal pain, SCS represents an effective option for relief. If you experience chronic pain, speak with your pain management physician to determine whether SCS is appropriate for you.
