Asthma affects many people worldwide, and it narrows the airways, causing coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. Living with asthma takes daily management, and the people around someone with asthma play a significant role in that process. Knowing what to do makes a practical difference. Here is more information on how to support someone who has this condition:

Learn About the Condition

Asthma is a chronic lung condition, and it varies widely from person to person. Some people experience mild symptoms once in a while, but others face frequent, serious flare-ups that disrupt daily life.  Understanding the difference between a mild episode and a severe attack matters.

A severe attack means the person struggles to speak full sentences, and their lips or fingernails may appear bluish. Call emergency services immediately if that happens. Ask the person directly about their experience with asthma. They know their condition better than any brochure does, and a direct conversation gives you accurate, personal information.

Understand the Triggers

Common asthma triggers include specific environmental and lifestyle factors. Being aware of them helps you support the person more effectively. Here are some major triggers:

  • Smoke, dust, mold, and pet dander
  • Cold air, exercise, or strong odors
  • Infections like colds or the flu

When you know someone’s specific triggers, you act differently in shared spaces. You might open windows instead of using chemical sprays, or suggest indoor alternatives on cold days. Small changes in your habits reduce the person’s exposure significantly.

Aid With Inhalers

Inhalers are the primary tool for managing asthma, so knowing how they work is practical. A rescue inhaler treats sudden symptoms, while a controller inhaler works daily to reduce inflammation. These two types serve different purposes, and mixing them up causes problems.

Watch for signs that the person needs their rescue inhaler, including rapid breathing, visible chest tightening, or an inability to finish sentences. If they reach for it, give them space and stay calm. Don’t rush with any assistance, which worsens the situation.

Support means knowing where the inhaler is kept at all times. You and the person with asthma should agree on a consistent spot, like a jacket pocket or bedside table. Never move it without telling them.

Keep a Plan Ready

An asthma action plan is a written document that the person’s doctor creates with them. It lists daily medications, trigger avoidance steps, and emergency instructions. Ask the person to share it with you so you know exactly what to do.

Keep these items accessible in shared spaces:

  • Copy of the asthma action plan
  • Rescue inhaler or a spare
  • Emergency contact numbers, including their doctor

Review the plan together at least once. Knowing the steps in advance means you act quickly and correctly during an episode, not while searching for information.

Schedule a Visit for Asthma

Supporting someone with asthma is an ongoing commitment, not a one-time effort. Medical check-ups help track whether their current treatment still works. Encourage the person to speak with a doctor at an allergy and asthma clinic. A specialist reviews their action plan, adjusts medications, and addresses new concerns. Book an appointment today and take one concrete step toward better everyday support.
