What To Expect During an MRI Scan

An MRI scan uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images of your body, and doctors order these scans to examine soft tissues, organs, and joints. If you have never had one, the process is complex, but knowing the steps ahead of time helps you be prepared. This is what happens during an MRI scan, from start to finish:

Removing Metal Objects

Metal interferes with the magnetic field, so you will remove certain items before the scan. Take off your watch, and place your jewelry in a secure spot. Since the magnet is strong, you will leave behind objects that respond to magnetic force.

Staff will ask about implants or metal inside your body before an MRI scan. You may need to remove hearing aids, and you will store eyeglasses nearby. If you have a pacemaker or surgical hardware, tell the technologist before you enter the room. Typical items to leave outside the scanning area include:

  • Keys and coins
  • Hairpins and belts
  • Credit cards with magnetic strips

Some clothing contains metal fasteners, so you may change into a gown. The gown keeps zippers and snaps away from the machine. When you have removed every metal object, the technologist confirms you are ready.

Lying Flat

You will lie flat on a padded table that slides into the scanner. The table moves slowly, and it positions the target area inside the opening. While the space is narrow, the technologist stays in contact with you the whole time.

A staff member may place a coil near the body part being scanned. The coil helps capture clearer images, and it rests gently against your skin. Since comfort matters during a long scan, you may receive a cushion or blanket.

Staying Still

Movement blurs the images, so you will hold as still as possible. The technologist gives instructions, and you follow them through a speaker. As certain sequences require steady positioning, you may hold your breath for short periods. The machine produces loud knocking and buzzing sounds during scanning. You will wear earplugs or headphones, and these reduce the noise.

Scanning and Reviewing Images

Scanning typically is over within 20 minutes. The exact time depends on the area, and it varies by the number of images needed. Since each sequence captures a different view, you may hear the noise start and stop several times.

A technologist watches from a nearby room during the process. You will speak through an intercom if you have issues, and staff respond right away. While you stay alone in the scanner, help remains close at hand.

After the scan, a radiologist reviews the images in detail. The radiologist writes a report, and your doctor receives the findings. Since interpretation takes time, you may wait a few days for results. Steps that follow your appointment typically include:

  • A radiologist analyzing the images
  • A doctor discussing the report with you
  • A follow-up plan based on the findings

Schedule an MRI Scan Today

An MRI scan follows a clear set of steps from preparation to results. While the sounds and enclosed space may be a challenge, staff guide you the entire time. Knowing what happens helps you arrive prepared for your appointment. If your doctor has recommended imaging, contact an imaging clinic to book your MRI scan.
