An ingrown toenail happens when the edge of a nail grows into the soft skin beside it instead of over the top, usually affecting the big toe. It can cause pain, swelling, and redness, and the area may feel tender to the touch. Several things lead to ingrown toenails, from ill-fitting shoes to a toe injury. Knowing your management options helps you decide what step to take next. Here are some effective strategies for treating ingrown toenails at home and with a specialist:

At-home Options

An ingrown toenail may be caused by tight shoes, nails cut too short or rounded, or an injury to the toe. The nail can grow into the surrounding skin, causing pain and possibly leading to infection. Mild cases often respond well to certain care strategies you can do at home, like changing your footwear. Tight or narrow shoes squeeze the toes and make ingrown toenails worse, so choose shoes with a roomy toe area.

Soaking the affected toe in warm water softens the skin and the nail, which may ease pressure on the sore area. Many people soak for about 15 to 20 minutes, two or three times a day. After soaking, dry your toe fully and keep it clean.

Some people try to gently lift their affected toenail away from the skin to guide the nail to grow correctly. When trying this at-home method, avoid digging into the corner of your nail or cutting deep into it, since this can lead to more swelling. If the toe does not improve after a few days, stop home nail trimming care and contact a podiatrist.

In-office Non-surgical Treatment Options

See a foot specialist, also called a podiatrist, when home care fails or symptoms grow worse. You should also seek care sooner if you have diabetes, poor circulation, or nerve problems in your feet, because small foot issues can become serious. If you experience toe pain or warmth, it may be time to see a specialist.

During a non-surgical visit, a specialist may lift the nail edge and place a splint or cotton barrier underneath. They might trim the nail in a controlled way and clean the area, especially for infected areas. The specialist can also show you how to care for the toe at home to help it heal well. They will follow up with you to make sure your toe heals and doesn’t develop more nail issues.

In-office Surgical Treatment Options

Surgery is recommended when the problem keeps coming back, when an infection is present, or when other methods haven’t worked. A common procedure is a partial nail removal. This is where the specialist numbs the toe with a local anesthetic and then removes the part of the nail that grows into the skin. In some cases, the podiatrist treats the nail bed too, so the section of nail does not grow back. The visit is usually short, and you can often walk afterward. The doctor will give you instructions on cleaning, changing the dressing, and watching for signs of infection during recovery.

Manage Ingrown Toenail Concerns Effectively

Treating an ingrown toenail starts with conservative measures and progresses to professional care if needed. Begin with warm soaks and roomier shoes, and give your toe time to settle. Pay attention to how the toe responds over a few days. If pain increases or you have a health condition that affects your feet, contact a podiatrist for personalized guidance. They can determine if non-surgical or surgical options are best suited for your situation.
