Allergy testing identifies substances that prompt an immune reaction in the body, generally done through a blood or skin prick test. A clinician reviews the results to map out which compounds cause symptoms, and the report often lists numeric values alongside each tested item. These numbers measure the body’s response level. Common allergies include food, pollen, pets, and insect bites, and these tests often check for all of these.

Triggers

A trigger is any substance that sets off an allergic response, such as pollen, dust mites, or specific foods. The report groups these items into categories, and each one carries a score that reflects the immune system’s reaction. Skin prick and blood allergy testing produce these scores through different methods. Both approaches point to the same goal: identifying the source of symptoms.

Pollen, animal dander, mold, and certain proteins appear frequently on test panels. When a value sits above the reference range, the clinician marks that item as a confirmed sensitivity, and the report notes its category for clarity. Because some allergies are related, a patient might react to one substance or several at once. Patterns across related items sometimes signal a broader sensitivity group.

Severity

Severity describes how strongly the body reacts to a given substance. The numeric score guides this measurement, and a higher value generally indicates a stronger response. Mild reactions produce minor symptoms, like itching or stomach discomfort. Stronger responses may involve more pronounced effects that a clinician tracks over time, and patients may need help assessing treatment methods.

A report often divides results into low, moderate, and high categories. Each band reflects a different reaction level, and the clinician uses these bands to organize a response plan. Severity readings change across seasons or with repeated exposure, since the body’s sensitivity increases with more reactions. Follow-up testing can show whether a reading has shifted.

Treatment

Treatment options are matched to the triggers and severity recorded in the report. A clinician selects an approach based on these findings, and the plan may combine avoidance strategies with medication. Some patients receive antihistamines for routine symptom control, which are often taken daily. Others follow a structured immunotherapy schedule that introduces small amounts of an allergen over time.

Avoidance of triggers is a common first step, and it pairs well with medical treatment for many people. A management plan is often outlined by the clinician during the allergy test review session. Each plan reflects the specific items flagged in the report, with potential treatment options depending on the kind of allergy. Regular check-ins help track how the body responds to the chosen approach.

Individuals with severe allergies may be prescribed epinephrine injectors to manage severe reactions. These can be especially dangerous for food allergies, since reactions often result in closing airways. Some individuals choose immunotherapy shots to reduce the chance of a severe reaction, and others find ways to avoid their allergens entirely.

Schedule an Allergy Testing Appointment

After receiving an allergy test, doctors can explain the results for which allergens caused a reaction. The clinician can discuss which allergens may be problematic, and they may also assess the severity of each trigger. If you experience reactions to common triggers, it’s possible that you may have an allergy. Contact a specialized office to schedule allergy testing.
