Foot health affects mobility, comfort, and overall quality of life. A podiatrist, commonly called a foot doctor, is a doctor who diagnoses and treats disorders of the feet and ankles. From routine maintenance to complex structural corrections, foot doctors provide comprehensive care for patients of various ages; here is more information about conditions foot doctors treat:

Corns and Calluses

A foot doctor helps patients with corns and calluses, two of the most common foot complaints. Corns are small, hardened areas of thickened skin that typically develop on the tops or sides of toes; calluses are broader patches of rough, thickened skin that form on the soles of the feet. Both develop as a response to repeated friction or pressure, which can be caused by ill-fitting footwear or abnormal gait.

Treatment depends on severity. A podiatrist may:

  • Trim or debride the thickened skin using specialized instruments
  • Prescribe custom orthotics to improve gait
  • Recommend padding or footwear modifications to prevent recurrence
  • Discuss hygiene routines, such as foot soaks and how to use a pumice stone to remove dead skin

When an underlying structural issue, such as bunions, is causing repeated skin buildup, surgical correction may be warranted.

Heel Pain and Treatments

Heel pain has various causes, and a foot doctor diagnoses and treats these causes. One common cause is plantar fasciitis, a condition where the thick band of tissue connecting the heel bone to the toes becomes inflamed. Other sources of heel pain include Achilles tendinitis, heel spurs, and stress fractures. Each condition requires a distinct treatment approach.

A podiatrist will perform a thorough physical examination and may order imaging to identify the root cause. Heel pain can stem from multiple conditions, so an accurate diagnosis guides the most effective course of action. Treatment options range from stretching protocols, physical therapy, and custom orthotics to corticosteroid injections or extracorporeal shockwave therapy for more persistent cases. Surgical intervention may be explored in cases where conservative treatments have not resolved the problem.

Ingrown Toenail Care and Treatment

An ingrown toenail occurs when the edge of a toenail grows into the surrounding skin rather than over it. The condition most commonly affects the big toe and causes pain, redness, swelling, and, in some cases, infection; improper nail trimming, tight footwear, and genetic nail shape are among the leading causes. To treat an ingrown toenail, a podiatrist can remove part or all of the problematic nail and educate patients on proper nail trimming and hygiene to avoid the issue in the future.

Hammer Toe Diagnosis and Treatment

Hammer toe is a deformity in which one or more of the smaller toes bend abnormally at the middle joint, causing the toe to resemble a hammer. The condition can develop from muscle and tendon imbalances, arthritis, or prolonged pressure from footwear. Hammer toes may be able to move at the joint, or they are sometimes rigid, where movement is no longer possible.

Treatment varies based on the stage of the deformity:

  • Flexible hammer toes respond well to toe exercises, splinting, and footwear changes
  • Padding reduces friction and discomfort during daily activity
  • Rigid hammer toes may require surgical correction to realign the joint and restore normal toe positioning

Find a Foot Doctor Today

Foot doctors treat a broad spectrum of conditions, from common skin issues like corns and calluses to structural deformities like hammer toes; addressing foot problems early helps prevent minor discomfort from progressing into more serious complications. Some foot conditions may require oral or injected medication, which a podiatrist is able to prescribe. To learn more about foot health and care, consult a foot doctor near you.
